I spend a lot of time struggling with anxiety. It sticks like a shadow. I can leap from the ground and separate myself from it for a moment, but as sure as gravity will bring me back to earth to meet my shadow again, anxiety always finds me. I’ve come to accept it as a principle emotion. It’s not something anyone can live without. In many ways, different perhaps from our cave-dwelling ancestors, it keeps us alive. We surely wouldn’t have gotten this far as a species without it. The anxious ape, so we are. For that reason, and because I don’t have much choice, I’ve decided to accept my anxiety. To live with it. But not to become a prisoner unto it. Rather than bowing down, I’ve chosen to shake hands. This record is a part of that handshake, I think. Anxiety is its theme. The way it creeps up, how it feels to meet its gaze, and every effort of managing, releasing, and embracing its presence. I believe there’s harmony in the handshake, after all. Anxiety doesn’t have to be the villain. It can be the anti-hero.
